2008 civics test: 100 questions

This is the civics list USCIS has used for years. It includes American government, American history, and integrated civics: geography, symbols, and holidays. If your N-400 is filed on or after October 20, 2025, do not use this list. Use the 2025 civics test.

What is on the 100 questions

  • Principles of American democracy, the three branches, and rights and responsibilities.
  • Colonial history, the 1800s, and recent history, including wars and the civil rights movement.
  • Geography that the 2025 test dropped, such as oceans, rivers, territories, and bordering states.

The official list is the 2008 civics questions and answers (USCIS PDF). Twenty of the 100 questions are starred for applicants who qualify for the 65/20 consideration.

Answers that change

The 2008 test still asks for the current president, vice president, Speaker, Chief Justice, the president's party, and the number of Supreme Court justices. It also asks for your senators, your representative, your governor, and your state capital. Use the USCIS updates page for the federal names.
